WFBY Holiday Week!!!

Hi and Thanks for rockin'!!
It's pretty quiet around the rockin' radio landscape this week as lots of folks are taking some much needed days off. (me included) I'm currently in Hilton Head, South Carolina where it was 70 degrees and sunny today!!! Wow what a change from the Mountain State. I'll be back on air on WFBY on Monday December 31 to count down the New Year!!!
Good Luck to the West Virginia Mountaineers as they head to Arizona and the Wednesday January 2nd Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma. Coach Stewart is leading the team and I've heard practices with him have been good and the team is pumped.
Don't forget to wear your blue and gold on Wednesday. My Chicago brother-in-law just gave me a really nice Blue WVU sweatshirt with gold letters and I'll be sporting that on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the search for a new coach continues. I think the University is looking for a coach who can continue the spread offense to help the players who are currently here, and the ones Coach Rod has recruited. It's gonna be a very capable coach no matter who they pick. I expect an announcement next week after the bowl game.

John Boy and Billy will give you a chance to win a DVD player and some free movies to watch this winter starting on Wednesday morning January 2nd. It's gonna be a great 2008!!!

The West Virginia Toughman competition is our first fun event coming up at the end of January. Listen to the FBY over the next several weeks for your chance to win your FREE tickets.

This Week at WFBY

Hey Gang!
Wow what a way to end up 2007!! Coach Rod is leaving the Mountaineers and emotions across the Mountain State are running high. Personally, if it was me I'd do the same. I don't like Michigan football, but it is one of the most storied programs in college football history. It's also the winningest college program ever. The chance to be a part of that tradition and mentioned in the company of the greats of all time is probably why Coach Rod is going there. Plus, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. I had a lot of calls from people yesterday who are angry, upset and can't understand why he would leave when he's already making a couple million a year in Morgantown. I don't think it's as much about the money as it is the tradition and opportunity to be on a bigger stage... Ego plays a part in many decisions a lot of us make. as well. As does the desire to be bigger and better. But it also could be the frustration of not getting help from WVU as evidenced by the comments of some big time donors to the athletic program there.....There's more on this at a story out of Pittburgh.....

Here's a link to an interesting take on the West Virginia Football situation from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette....

The $7 million project, which is being spearheaded by Cooper's Christian nonprofit the Solid Rock Foundation, reportedly will feature a concert hall and recording studio, as well as basketball courts, rock-climbing walls and other facilities. Evel Was a Rock-n-Roller!!!

A true American Hero died over the weekend! Daredevil motorcyclist Evel Knievel passed away on Friday. He was 69. Knievel had been in failing health for years with diabetes and an incurable lung condition.

... Early in his adult life, Knievel participated in pro rodeos, ski-jumping events, and motocross events. He spent some time in the Army and ran a big-game hunting service. After one motocross event he decided to settle down and support his family, so Knievel sold insurance.

... After not receiving a promotion he thought he deserved, he left the insurance business and opened his own motorcycle shop. The store eventually closed but he landed a job at a Honda motorcycle dealership in Sunnyside, Washington. It was there that a well-known motocross racer taught Knievel how to do a "wheelie" and ride while standing on the seat of a bike.

... Not able to adequately support his family, Knievel recalled the Joie Chitwood show he saw as a boy and decided that he could do a similar show using a motorcycle. Promoting the show himself, Knievel rented the venue, wrote the press releases, set up the show, sold the tickets and served as his own master of ceremonies. After enticing the small crowd with a few wheelies, he proceeded to jump a twenty-foot-long box of rattlesnakes and two mountain lions. Despite landing short and having his back wheel hit the box containing the rattlesnakes, Knievel managed to land safely. Knievel realized that to make any real money he would have to hire more performers, stunt coordinators and other personnel so that he could concentrate on the jumps. Having little money, he went looking for a sponsor and found one in Bob Blair, a distributor for Norton Motorcycles. Blair offered to provide the needed motorcycles, but he wanted the name changed from the Bobby Knievel and His Motorcycle Daredevils Thrill Show to Evil Knievel and His Motorcycle Daredevils. Knievel didn't want his image to be that of a Hells Angels rider, so he convinced Blair to allow him to use Evel instead of Evil. And so Evel Knievel was born.

One of the most unbelievable jumps he ever did was at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. He was hurt badly but made the jump. The video is here:

Rumors are rampant that following the December reunion show in London, Led Zeppelin will organize and launch a full scale reunion tour in 2008 with The Cult opening shows. These rumors were started by Cult lead singer Ian Astbury at a concert several weeks back. Would be a cool gig wouldn't it? Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham(son of John).............

Sad note to pass along......

From MTV.com......
Quiet Riot singer Kevin DuBrow died Sunday, drummer Frankie Banali confirmed in a post on his Web site. DuBrow was 52 years old and the official cause of his death has yet to be determined, pending autopsy and toxicology results.
"I can't even find words to say," Banali wrote. "Please respect my privacy as I mourn the passing and honor the memory of my dearest friend Kevin DuBrow."
DuBrow's body was discovered on Sunday inside the rocker's Las Vegas home; police were called to the residence by a concerned neighbor, and DuBrow was pronounced dead at 5:20 p.m. According to those close to the singer, DuBrow celebrated his birthday last month in New Orleans and seemed to be in good health. According to a spokesperson for the Las Vegas police department, there were no signs of forced entry at the home, and police do not suspect foul play.
Quiet Riot bassist Kelly Garni has asked fans to be patient for details on the singer's death.
"I ask this to all of you not only for myself but for other friends and family," Garni wrote, in a message posted to a Web site honoring the memory of Quiet Riot founding member Randy Rhoads. "I ask that no one here offer any speculation or opinions, theories or other things that could be construed as negative or, and I'm sorry for this, even sympathetic, right at this immediate time. I am already, within hours of this, having to deal with untrue rumors and speculation and that only adds fuel to that. There is a tendency for the subject of Kevin to incite flames on every board, and now is not the time for that. I will explain to everyone here the facts and the truth in the next 24 to 48 hours as I realize this will affect us all. So please, until then, be patient. All details and other pertinent info will be passed on to you here when it becomes available to me."
Bill Chavis, owner of Chavis Records, the label that issued Quiet Riot's last LP, 2006's Rehab, also confirmed the news.
"DuBrow's body was found by friends on Sunday, November 25, in his Las Vegas home," reads the label's site. "As I mourn his death with a heavy heart, I will remember hearing his voice and the music for the very first time on the radio back in 1983. I will remember all the great music Kevin and Quiet Riot gave to so many of us over the years and I will say, 'Thank you, Kevin. May you rest in peace.' "
Credited with helping to launch the 1980s glam-metal scene, Quiet Riot are perhaps best known for their cover of Slade's "Cum on Feel the Noize," which appeared on 1983's Metal Health and eventually peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album is widely considered the first by a metal band to reach the chart's #1 position.
Rhoads formed Quiet Riot in 1975, but the group split four years later when he left to join Ozzy Osbourne's band (Rhoads died in a plane crash in 1982). DuBrow launched his own band, called DuBrow, and later reverted to the Quiet Riot name.
While Metal Health put Quiet Riot on the map, the band's subsequent releases weren't as well-received. Not helping the situation were some of DuBrow's comments: During the '80s, the singer was notorious for deriding contemporary metal bands in interviews and even lashed out at the press and the band's label. Toward the conclusion of the band's 1987 tour, DuBrow was fired from Quiet Riot; he was left behind in a hotel, while the rest of the band took an earlier flight. However, Quiet Riot's career with new singer Paul Shortino met with even less success.
The members gradually reunited under the Quiet Riot moniker in the early '90s and continued to tour and record consistently until DuBrow's passing. In 2004, DuBrow released a collection of covers as his first solo LP, In for the Kill
